Campus Peer Support Group Meetings

HIDE MY VISIT QUICKLY

Peer Support Groups at Victoria University

In partnership with Victoria University, MOSAIC-Tiaki Tangata are now running peer support groups on campus for students. These support groups are facilitated by trained MOSAIC-Tiaki Tangata volunteers who are also Vic Uni students.

Attendance at these support groups is open to any student - regardless of sex/gender identification or what issues you are struggling with. Although we specialise in male sexual abuse recovery, you don't have to be a guy to attend, neither do you have to be a survivor of sexual abuse.

What is a Mosaic-Tiaki Tangata Campus Support Group Like?

Our groups are a safe, confidential and empowering environment where all participants are treated with respect and equality.

Benefits of peer support with Mosaic-Tiaki Tangata include:
  • Healing
  • Problem-solving for personal issues
  • Shared connection, empathy and respect. We know what you're going through. We've been there too
  • Increased socialisation and reduced isolation
  • Increased self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Reduced depression and anxiety
  • Improved relationships
  • Getting your anger under control
  • Reduction in harmful use of alcohol and/or drugs
  • Getting more from friendships and family relationships
  • Increased ability to trust yourself and others
  • Reduced self-destructive behaviour
  • Decreased negative behaviours.

There is power, sanctuary and the strength that can only come from a shared community in our peer support groups.

To ensure the safety and validation of all our participants, we have a code of conduct and rules around how meetings are run. We go through these at the start of every meeting.

Saskia Ymker - Mosaic-Tiaki Tangata Campus Support Group Facilitator
"University is unlike any other experience I’ve ever known. Nothing prepared me for the pressure cooker of feeling pulled in so many directions at the same time. Or feeling so completely overwhelmed by the expectations being placed on me.

Even when I wasn’t failing, I felt like I was. Nothing felt enough. The way I made it through was by forming a few really strong relationships with my peers - people that were going through similar things to what I was. People who got it.

I’m not sure whether I would have made it through University without these relationships - however, without them, I know I wouldn’t have succeeded to the degree that I did.
"The problem is, that it’s not always easy to find peers in our life, especially at Uni. Or to find ways to connect with them. Despite being surrounded by people, we can feel so very alone.

It’s for these reasons that I’m so excited to be a part of the team providing Peer Support groups on campus.
The idea of these groups is to acknowledge these challenges and provide support through them.

We are all inherently strong and capable, and often the only thing we need is a caring community to remind us of that. These groups are a safe space to talk about any challenges that you are experiencing in your life, and to explore your strengths.

Anything and anyone is welcome as together we recognize what it means to be human and explore the ups and downs that are a part of that.

These groups are run by people like you and I, who have experienced challenges. This allows us to relate to each other over shared experiences and to hold empathy for any experiences we haven’t shared.

Please join me in a place where you can feel supported and supportive.

We look forward to meeting you."
- Saskia Ymker, Mosaic-Tiaki Tangata Campus Peer Support Facilitator
